Customer Loyalty

bettys and taylors group“Our family business has pledged to help protect an area of rainforest the size of Yorkshire, and for the first phase we’re supporting a UBoC project in Peru’s Amazon Rainforest. Our customers are showing great support for our campaign and it’s giving us the opportunity to build long term relationships with customers who see good value in our own good values.”
Mary Godfrey, Communications Director for Bettys & Taylors Group

Supporting the protection of an area of Peruvian rainforest the size of Yorkshire is the latest challenge taken on by Bettys and Taylors of Harrogate with the support of their customers.

Working with The Rainforest Foundation UK, this three year project is based within the Ashaninka Communal Reserve, an area of 184,000 hectares, and the surrounding community territories based along the Ene and Tambo rivers. The project works with the 10,000-strong local indigenous Ashaninka community to defend their rainforest home.

Some of the most exciting outcomes of the first year of the project include:

  • The development of a supply chain for the cocoa grown in the rainforest by the Ashaninka people, building on Ashaninka traditional practices to work towards a culturally appropriate and sustainable livelihood.
  • Work carried out with the local indigenous organisation, CARE, and local authorities, to develop a management plan for the Ashaninka Communal Reserve, which is based on consultations with the Ashaninka communities situated in the vicinities of the Reserve. This is the first experience in Peru’s history, where an indigenous organisation has been directly involved in developing a management plan for an indigenous reserve.
  • Demarcation work done by CARE, which has helped to hinder illegal logging in the Communal Reserve, and also prevented conflicts between the Ashaninka communities, the logging companies and non-Ashaninka communities. This is contributing to the fight against deforestation and illegal logging activities in the Ene Valley.
