Sofala Community Carbon Project, Mozambique

The project improves rural livelihoods while restoring and managing forest resources.

Country Size Project Partners
Mozambique 18,000 hectares Envirotrade and Plan Vivo

Background

The fighting that took place around Gorongosa National Park during the country’s 17 year civil war took a terrible toll on both the forests and local communities that had taken refuge in the forests.

Project Objectives

To develop sustainable land-use and rural development activities in communities within the buffer zone of Gorongosa National Park.

Project Activities

Project activities include agroforestry, avoided deforestation and forest conservation. The project objectives are to target unsustainable land-use practices, create investment in conserved forests, develop and test incentive mechanisms for protecting forests for carbon conservation and develop financial distribution mechanisms for the equitable sharing of benefits from carbon financing.

Funding Required

Project activites are supported through the trade of  carbon credits accredited by Plan Vivo. This is the first project in the world to receive a “Triple Gold” rating under the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Alliance (CCBA) standards. The project has already traded more than 250,000 tonnes of CO2. Project actions from 2003 to the present have generated a further total of some 850,000 tonnes of CO2 from sequestration activities, all of which is available for sale to support the project and local communities into the future.

Funding Required

Project documents can be downloaded from the Plan Vivo website.
