Quirimbas Community Carbon Project

This project will protect a large block of pristine Miombo forest in the Quirimbas National Park while promoting sustainable development through improved land-use practices.

Background

Quirimbas National Park consists of coastal forest, mangroves and rich coral reefs supporting 14 endemic species. The park is home to 90,000 people with the forest providing their main source of income. Forests are under severe pressure from subsistence farming, timber poaching and charcoal production.

Project Objectives

Training and support will be provided to help communities increase their agricultural yields and improve their livelihoods without resorting to “slash and burn” farming techniques. The core of these activities will be the implementation of sustainable resource management and agriculture.

Project Activities

The development of sustainable land-use practices including agroforestry and non-timber forest products such as honey production, forest management, restoration of degraded areas, research, verification and monitoring.

Funding Required

£1.75m needed over 3 years. Funding is flexible. For example, individual aspects of the project can be supported.
