The direct beneficiaries of this project are some 2,500 household farmers surrounding the Lower Palani hills.
Background
The Lower Palani hills are well known for its flora and fauna biodiversity, including endangered rosewood trees. However, for many years the forest has been illegally plundered resulting in water scarcity, landslides soil erosion and loss of biodiversity.
Project Objectives
To ensure an ecological balance in the Lower Palani hills through improved natural resource management and sustainable livelihoods for nearby communities.
Project Activities
Project activities include: community training and workshops to increase environmental awareness and encourage involvement in afforestation and natural resource management; agro-forestry and afforestation on mountain slopes; soil conservation and development activities; the provision of agricultural tools and implements and capacity building in community organisation and management.
Funding Required
Sawed Trust requests the support of $78,379 over 3 years. Funding in flexible, for example, a donation of $2,862 would support agro-forestry activities for a full year.
