CIRHEP will promote tree planting activities in watershed communities with indigenous tree species and horticulture crops as part of continual community development.
Background
Poor land and water management in the surrounding watersheds of Kadavakurichi Forest Reserve has resulted in rural communities experiencing extensive social, economic and environmental problems.
Project Objectives
The Centre for Improved Rural Health and Environmental Protection’s (CIRHEP) mission is to create a sustainable human-environmental relationship and the improvement in rural life through poverty alleviation, environmental education, conservation and ecological restoration in partnership with local communities.
Project Activities
Since 2000 CIRHEP has been actively involved in development activities in 25 villages surrounding Kadavakuirchi Forest Reserve. These activities include: watershed development, organic farming and sustainable agricultural training, gender equality and empowerment for women, environmental education and sustainable income generation. New activities will include tree planting of more than 800,000 tree saplings and agro-forestry development over a 3 to 4 year period.
Funding Required
CIRHEP initially requests the support of £60,333 to plant 150,000 trees in 7 villages of the Musuvanuhtu watershed covering 780 hectares. The project is planned to expand to other watershed villages covering some 3,500 hectares in total. Funding is flexible.
