Background
Slash and burn agriculture is causing rapid deforestation in Northern Honduras, a critical conservation area for the Central American Wet Forest Zone.
Project Objectives
The Inga Foundation works to encourage farmers to use sustainable agricultural methods providing food security and preventing the need for slash and burn agriculture. The project will enable farmers to grow their crops on the same plot of land forever without destroying new areas of rainforest, whilst remaining close to their family homes and protecting their environment for future generations.
Project Activities
The project will provide support to farmers in practicing Inga alley-cropping. Alley-cropping is a simple, sustainable solution to the devastating practice of slash and burn.
This project was recently featured in the documentary Up in Smoke.
