Alongside reforestation activities, the project aims to establish ecological corridors, protect current areas of forest and encourage more sustainable agricultural techniques.
Background
Project areas have been, and continue to be severely deforested as a result of shifting cultivation for annual cropping and livestock holding. In return ArBolivia offers a profitable alternative to clearing primary forests, combining livelihood improvement for participating farmers with environmental preservation.
Project Objectives
The project aims to serve as an innovative example for Latin America of the successful integration of commercial plantation forestry combined with nature conservation and participation by the local population. The project aims to scale up over time and plans to involve around 2,000 smallholder farmers when fully developed.
Project Activities
Unlike most other commercial plantations, ArBolivia uses a wide range indigenous tree species and shares the benefits of the timber equally with local farmers. More than 1,000 smallholder farmers have signed up to participate, agreeing to plant at least one hectare of their land with hardwood trees in exchange for 50% of timber revenues accrued at the end of the trees’ 20 – 35 year maturity cycle.
Funding Required
The ability to purchase carbon offsets through Plan Vivo Standard Voluntary Emission Reductions (VERs).
